News Story Reflection - Wong Cho Yi

This piece of news story was titled 2045, The Year Man Becomes Immortal, and it was written by Lev Grossman, the book critic of Time Magazine. He covers technology section most of the time.

Actually, the article was the cover story and to me it was very impressive that there was a cable wire connected to a human’s neck. Without looking at other text, people could guess what it is going to talk about via seeing this photo, how human could become in the future. “if you believe humans and machines will become one. Welcome to the Singularity movement” is also printed on the cover page. The words humans and machines and Singularity make me more curious about what content of this news story.

In the content, Lev Grossman used quite a long of length to explain the idea of Kurzweil – the Singularity. Kurzweil was a great inventor. In his age of 16, he built a computer which was able to compose music note. And until now, he is still very famous in the technology field. He said in the story, ‘we’re approaching a moment when computers will become intelligent, and not just intelligent but more intelligent than humans’.

Based on his calculation, he believed when human technology can be able to create a super intelligent computer, human ear will come to the end. That means technology/ computer will replace the status of human and one day we will merge with them to become a super intelligent cyber, this is the meaning of Singularity. When ultra intelligent machine is exist, they will possible to create even better technology, so that ‘within 30 years, we will have the technological means to create superhuman intelligence. Shortly after, the human era will be the ended’. The reason is that technology development is going so quickly enough that making the world so different.

In my opinion, when the Singularity has come, people may enjoy the products which created by ultra intelligent machine. However, some meaningful concept might become blurring or disappeared, such as time/ age and distance, and human will not be the top in the planet (even become the lowest in the future). And this situation will last forever. At that time (the time when Singularity is really arrived), the machine may be capable to solve the problems that we are facing and struggling right now. It sounds good to have a better living environment or higher level of technology which offer us a more convenient life. Then the question came to my mind, who is the creator/ inventor of this good world?

There is no doubt that this kind of super intelligent computer is created by human, but the doubt is that what is the answer when human is already surmounted by the computer? The prestige of human may not be disappeared suddenly, but dissolve in a slower speed. Then what is the status of human when human is no longer an inventor, but a user? I am interested what human pride may become, will it be higher because they think that they have created the creator which change the world into a different one, or losing the pride that they can no longer smarter than the machine creator? I think, when human can be alive only when they became a cyborg, the meaning of HUMAN will be declined and the status of machine will raised as a matter of course. So should human keeps rely on technology? Or this kind of status shifting is a must to happen since this world has been existed? Does human have another path to avoid this kind of problem?
